I am lucky enough to have Chef's Catalog about a mile from my house. I figure they represent the best in kitchen tools. What surprises me is that a brand with a reputation like Chef's Catalog and a brand like Calphalon can sell such junk!!!! We purchased this toaster oven as an investment. The knob broke off within a month. We have used the toaster but not the oven since then, while the broken knob sits useless in a drawer.
Certainly this happened during factory testing. I can't see how it didn't!!!! How could Calphalon sell this to the public with a defect?
I agree with another reviewer who said, "save your money, buy a $60 toaster."
We were big fans of the Black and Decker under the cupboard toaster oven. We had spent $30 every few years to replace it when it died. They no longer make them, unfortunately. But those were the best toasters in terms of counter space, reliability and design. Maybe Calphalon could take some notes from those designers.

My oven works.
It makes toast - no problem there.
The oven cooks - but not evenly (as would be expected), but it does the job. I've cooked pizza, casseroles, Trader joe's appetizers and warmed up leftovers in it
The timer knob broke -Calphalon happily replaced it
The nonstick pan - it stained.
Asthetics -Looks great.
Weird - very very very faint humming sound heard when plugged in.
Calphalon customer service - awesome and very helpful in replacing my unit
If you've never had a toaster oven - you will love this! If you are expecting larger oven quality - you will hate it. If you want something that works - you will be happy with it.
Bottom line: Would I buy it again? no. It's not worth the money. I expected a lot more as it had the 'calphalon' name.
I'm not totally dissatisfied with it, it's just not the quality that I was expecting from a convection style small oven. It does a good job for the things that I use it for. The Krups one I used to use was much better.

"Disappointment" 2010-04-23

First off the Toaster knob cracked at 3 months. No Toaster. Calphalon shipped us a replacement. Easy to install, problem solved.
Less than a month after that, the Toaster button stopped working. The reinforced Toaster knob that Calphalon shipped us still works (we've hardly used it), but the little button you press to start the toaster will no longer depress.
Calphalon has sent us a pickup ticket for a no charge RMA return. The warranty wording is such that they could find that the unit is not defective and charge us for the repair. We'll see.
It's hard to get excited about this unit. It's way too big to make a slice of toast each morning. For a device with only three buttons, it's not that easy to use (non-intuitive) and hard to see. I would settle for a good ole two slice toaster... but this was a Christmas gift.
BTW, you can make toast with the convection oven. It comes out kinda dry and takes five minutes. But it's warm and crunchy....

Nice solid and heavy unit with good toasting and oven functions. I liked it for the first 3 months until the toaster and the convection buttons began to
stick and then finally seized up. I had to return it and traded it for different brand.

This has not been a pleasant experience:
Manufacturing issues:
1) The door hinges were loose, so the door would "snap" loudly, enough so my wife and kids did not want to use, it sounded like something was going to break every time the door was opened or closed.
2) are also 2 black grommets that are on rollers to make the operation of the door smooth, one was mounted incorrectly.
3) there are supposed to be 4 rubber feet, there were only 3 installed.
I would have returned this product, but I traveled a fair amount and did not return the product to Amazon in the alloted amount of time (and a phone call to Amazon a few days after the return period did not change their minds.)
I disassembled the oven and repaired the problems (rivets were not tight on the hinge, and the grommet simply required correct positioning).
Once the oven became usable, we began to toast in it, and it sort of bakes/heats the bread, but doesn't make it crispy (the heating elements don't glow red like in a toaster).
Since Amazon would not return, I called Calphalon to see if they would accept a return of their defective oven, and I was told I "abused" the oven by repairing it (I'm an engineer and was a manufacturing plant manager for many years, but that was not particularly relevant), but they would send a return label to me. I'm actually not sure what will happen when I return it - I just want my money back.
The last issue is also a deal-killer: the reason I spent 5 times what other toaster ovens cost was because this one could bake 9x13 pan size: the only pan that will fit is the one supplied by Calphalon - the problem is that the pan size is so short, you can't really bake anything in it - it will overflow the sides.
It is a nice looking oven, but, that about all the positive I can say about it. No good toasting, no baking, and it came to me almost unusable due to manufacturing defects.
