"Can I get one that works, please?!" 2010-07-20

I bought one of these from Amazon.com and foolishly threw away the box before using the oven, so I couldn't return it to Amazon.com ( It was Cuisinart, right? And it gets all these good reviews here at the Amazon.com site! )

Then I try the oven with a simple task of making some chicken nuggets. They came out cold! Why? Well the oven was set to 375 degrees, but it beeped to say it was up to temperature, but the real temperature in there was only 150 at the time! I verified this with an oven thermometer. But it was a meat thermometer so I bought another more precise oven temperature thermometer from ( yes ) Amazon.com and verified this. Then the oven took another 10-15 minutes after that feat, to actually reach stable temperature ( where it regulates ) , BUT it was 50 degrees below what I had it set for! So I had to find a box to pack it in and get a return authorization from Cuisinart and send it back. Fortunately I saved my old toaster over, which wasn't working so well anymore, but at least still worked. Oh, and this oven's serial number wasn't showing up in their database. What is THAT?

They got the over returned and then shipped me out a new one. So I get the new one and figure, well it's gotta work this time, right? So I toss the box out in the trash that night.

WRONG. This one does exactly the same thing! It tells me it's up to the set temperature after about 2 minutes but is really under 200 degrees when I set it to 400. Then I gotta wait for it to stabilize to regulating temperature, and that final temp is 25-50 degrees below what the oven thermometer says!

So I wanted to be fair and went and bough another oven thermometer to verify this ( from Amazon.com ) and this time made sure it says it's a super accurate one and all that. Same thing.

So now I have to get a shipping box and ship this second one back again. At least this time Cuisinart has offered to pay shipping, BUT I tossed my old toaster oven out this last time, thinking the second Cuisinart one HAD to work, right? So now I'll be without one.

Cuisinart is also looking into whether this could have anything to do with the altitude ( we're in Denver ) but who knows?

I'm so sick of this and would not recommend this to ANYONE now!

I ordered this toaster oven after my $50 GE broke after about 2 years. I wanted a high quality toaster oven that will last and do it's job. I have had the Cuisinart for about 3 weeks now and am, for the most part, very pleased. The packaging was very extensive and protective. The manual is helpful and easy to understand, although slightly more extensive than I had expected. I didn't intend on spending 20-30 minutes reading a toaster oven manual, but that's not a big deal. I don't typically use the oven for extensive cooking, such as roasts, chickens, etc. More so for toast, bagels, biscuits, frozen pizza and reheating left overs. For those things, this product works well. I have only cooked one pizza, but it came out perfect and cooked in about 8 minutes (thin crust).

The downfalls, which for the most part I was aware of prior to purchasing the procut (thanks to great Amazon reviews) are: 1) The crumb tray has to be emptied from the back. 2) It's rather dark inside the oven since it's deep, which makes it tough to see while cooking. I find myself opening the oven and sliding the tray halfway out to see how much longer I should leave the food in. A light inside would be nice. I'm not sure if that's offered on higher end models. 3) A backlight on the display would be nice.

Not really a downfall, but since there are a lot of settings/options, you will need to experiment to find out what works for the tyep of food you are cooking and your liking. During this learning process I often find myself under-toasting/cooking which means the oven will turn off and I have to reset it and turn it back on. As time passes, this has become more of a null issue.

Overall I am pleased with the product. It feels and looks solid, cooks well, doesn't take up too much space and looks nice on my counter. We will see if it stands the test of time. I would give it 4.5 stars if that was an option.

Have used our new roaster oven for some time now. Does all we have asked of it very well. Like especially the timer feature which tells how much time is left on cycle as it greatly facilitates coordination of toast and rest of breakfast. Unit also bakes very well. Temp setings seem very accurate as pertains to baking items. All in all a very satisfactory unit.

"Multiple manufacturing defects, "bakes" doesn't toast bread" 2009-09-12

This has not been a pleasant experience:

Manufacturing issues:

1) The door hinges were loose, so the door would "snap" loudly, enough so my wife and kids did not want to use, it sounded like something was going to break every time the door was opened or closed.

2) are also 2 black grommets that are on rollers to make the operation of the door smooth, one was mounted incorrectly.

3) there are supposed to be 4 rubber feet, there were only 3 installed.

I would have returned this product, but I traveled a fair amount and did not return the product to Amazon in the alloted amount of time (and a phone call to Amazon a few days after the return period did not change their minds.)

I disassembled the oven and repaired the problems (rivets were not tight on the hinge, and the grommet simply required correct positioning).

Once the oven became usable, we began to toast in it, and it sort of bakes/heats the bread, but doesn't make it crispy (the heating elements don't glow red like in a toaster).

Since Amazon would not return, I called Calphalon to see if they would accept a return of their defective oven, and I was told I "abused" the oven by repairing it (I'm an engineer and was a manufacturing plant manager for many years, but that was not particularly relevant), but they would send a return label to me. I'm actually not sure what will happen when I return it - I just want my money back.

The last issue is also a deal-killer: the reason I spent 5 times what other toaster ovens cost was because this one could bake 9x13 pan size: the only pan that will fit is the one supplied by Calphalon - the problem is that the pan size is so short, you can't really bake anything in it - it will overflow the sides.

It is a nice looking oven, but, that about all the positive I can say about it. No good toasting, no baking, and it came to me almost unusable due to manufacturing defects.

This was our first toaster oven and we went with the Calphalon name and bought this when it was newly released. I think we will be more cautious with future purchases and wait for user reviews.

It looks nice. It has a large non stick capacity but as at least one other person here noted, it is the only oven I have ever used that has no stop on the rack so it pulls right out and once it is out so far it tilts down and there goes your hot dish, sliding right out! A serious flaw.

The dial on the timer broke. I called and got through right away and it was a known issue. They sent a new one out right away with a metal band to prevent the inner sleeve from breaking. I would have thought that these two items would have been field tested before release.

But, it heats and it toasts well enough. We just think there are better ones out there.

I love the size of this oven! It's spacious enough inside as well as compact enough to fit on our kitchen counter. I haven't had any problems with it so far. We had successfully baked lasagna, chicken, salmon, and catfish in the convection oven. Toasting french bread and regular loaf bread was a breeze, even when the bread was frozen. I gave this a four star since I haven't had the chance to try and bake any cookies, pastries, or other desserts in it. Hopefully we'll have a chance to try it soon enough.

No complaints about this bowl. The small size is fine for our needs but we don't prepare large or fancy meals very often. I bought a replacement bowl for my DLC-1SS because the bowl became really dingy and filthy-looking after using it to grind some allspice. The texture of the spice acted like sandpaper and scarred the inside surface and it looks dirty all of the time.

I purchased this a year ago based on the typical quality of Cuisinart ..... like other reviews have pointed out this oven has a significant design flaw with the door. After less than 2 months the door started closing only after two or three attempts ... the frequency of successful door closures has now reduced to zero . . bottom line don't wast your money on this one ..... tis a throw away

"It's fantastic in every way!!" 2010-02-03

This is the third Cuisinart TOB-50 oven I have had. On two of them the handles broke on both of them. Of course I couldn't use them if I couldn't open the oven door. I did use one for about 6 months but fussed and cussed it because I couldn't close the door. I finally closed it so hard the plastic handle broke. But with the new one I have just purchased, the design must have been changed because there is a different kind of handle on it. I am 83 years old and hope this one will last me. I love the compactness of the oven as well as the toaster function. I can put my piece of toast in the oven and by the time it 's done, my coffee is ready. Such coordination!! I absolutely love having this oven in my kitchen. I'll never try another brand.

Product functions well. But that's it. We had 2 of the same units. We returned the first one because of problems with the door hinges. In reading other reviews, this is a common problem. We received another one from Cuisinart and we now have the same problem. Both were less then a year old. This model also doesn't show it's age well. In a short time, it's starts looking old - this despite every attempt to keep in clean and looking new. Bottom line - stay away from this item.

"Peeling Paint and Door Won't Shut! Same complaints as others!" 2009-12-05

I hate to be the I-told-you-so person in my family, but I didn't want to get a toaster oven. I like my counters clear and even the smallest toaster oven is a space hog, and this one isn't small. But my husband for some reason really wanted to get rid of our classic 2-slice toaster and get this oven so I relented. Although I miss my counter space, I actually came to appreciate being able to use our full size oven less, and I roasted a lot of vegetables and found it easy and convenient for that purpose. BUT, we've had it about 2 years and now I've just noticed that the interior black paint has peeled off, presumably falling into our food. I have 2 kids under 4 and I'm really upset about this. I spoke to customer service and after I described the problem and the fact that I was worried about harm to my kids, he asked, "Does the oven work?" What the! If that's the standard they are using, then this company stands for NOTHING. Also, annoying but not the end of the world is that the door of the oven, as sooooo many reviewers noted, does not shut. Slamming the door of the toaster oven every time you use it is annoying and wakes up my little ones (their bedroom is closest to the kitchen).
